Remember the Alamo… and Also That Time Pee-wee Herman Went There

Let’s get one thing out of the way: yes, I went to the Alamo.
No, the basement still isn’t there.
And yes, I absolutely quoted Pee-wee’s Big Adventure while doing it.

San Antonio is one of those cities that sneaks up on you — charming, walkable, and full of surprises (like a haunted hotel, riverside mariachi bands, and more margaritas than you’ll know what to do with). I went expecting a history lesson. I left with a full camera roll, a mild sunburn, and a deep appreciation for Texas-sized portions.

🏛️ First Stop: The Alamo

You have to go. It’s a rite of passage. Even if you’ve seen the movie, even if you’re only here for the tacos — go stand in front of that stone façade and let the history (and the Pee-wee nostalgia) wash over you.

Fun facts I learned:

  • The battle only lasted 13 days.
  • Davy Crockett probably didn’t wear that raccoon hat in real life.
  • There is still no basement.

It’s smaller than I imagined, but full of weight. The history is tangible. The gift shop has patches. And if you don’t hum Tequila in your head at least once while walking the grounds, I don’t know how to help you.

🌮 River Walk

San Antonio’s River Walk is what happens when a city decides sidewalks are overrated and instead builds an entire floating paradise for tourists and tacos. It’s adorable. Cobblestone paths, arching bridges, boats full of happy people, and restaurants with patios basically on top of the water. I took a boat tour through the river and I think it was definitely worth it.

Pro tip: Go at night. The lights? Magical. The sangria? Dangerous.

🎺 History, Culture, and the Ghost of Pee-wee’s Bike

Beyond the Alamo, the city is full of missions, markets, and museums that make you feel like you’re learning something even while holding a churro. I wandered through Historic Market Square, got lost in artisan stalls, and sampled the local cuisine…tacos.

Final Thoughts

San Antonio gave me:

  • Sun on my face
  • Salsa on my shirt
  • A small, proud moment of quoting a cult classic in a national landmark

Whether you’re here for the history, the food, the riverboats, or just to shout “I KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I?” at the Alamo (respectfully), this city delivers.

Just remember: The stars at night are big and bright
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 deep in the heart of Texas. Remember the Alamo!
